John Fleming and Janet Fleming’s parents and places and dates of birth are unknown. The only knowledge of them is taken from their son Hugh’s death certificate. It is possible that Janet’s surname may not actually be Fleming; however a John Fleming and Janet Fleming were proclaimed for marriage in Avondale, Lanarkshire on 17 April 1768.1<\/a><\/sup>National Records of Scotland, Old Parish Records, 1768 Marriages, 621 (Avondale), 10\/273<\/span> In usual parsimonious Avondale fashion, the absolute minimum of detail is recorded in the Old Parish Registers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hugh Fleming<\/strong>, born at Martinholm Farm in Avondale on 18 July 1773.2<\/a><\/sup>National Records of Scotland, Old Parish Records, 1773 Births, 621 (Avondale), 10\/273<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Hugh married Mary Craig<\/a> (b. Mains of Glengavel, Avondale on 31 May 1785), daughter of Alexander Craig and Elizabeth Craig<\/a>.3<\/a><\/sup>National Records of Scotland, Old Parish Records, 1785 Births, 621 (Avondale), 20\/5<\/span> They were proclaimed for marriage in the parish of Avondale on 18 March 1809.4<\/a><\/sup>National Records of Scotland, Old Parish Records, 1809 Marriages, 621 (Avondale), 20\/192<\/span><\/p>\n

Hugh and Mary are at Low Ploughland Farm, Avondale on the 18415<\/a><\/sup>National Records of Scotland, 1841 Census, 621\/3\/5<\/span> and 18516<\/a><\/sup>National Records of Scotland, 1851 Census, 621\/3\/14<\/span> Census.<\/p>\n

Hugh died at Low Ploughland Farm on 15 February 1855, age 81.7<\/a><\/sup>National Records of Scotland, 1855 Deaths, 621\/19<\/span><\/p>\n

Mary died at Low Ploughland Farm\u00a0 on 22 January 1856, age 70.8<\/a><\/sup>National Records of Scotland, 1856 Deaths, 621\/10<\/span><\/p>\n

William Fleming<\/strong>, born in Avondale c.1782.9<\/a><\/sup>Estimated from census returns and death certificate<\/span><\/p>\n

William never married. He died at Laigh (Low) Ploughland Farm on 6 August 1869, age 87.10<\/a><\/sup>National Records of Scotland, 1869 Deaths, 621\/80<\/span><\/p>\n
